Staircases in Hamburg
Stairwells in Hamburg city centre
They are everywhere – and yet they are usually overlooked: beautiful staircases in Hamburg’s historic city centre. Come with me on this staircase tour and discover what ornamental art can be found behind the inconspicuous doors of old office blocks!
We start our tour at the NIVEA House on Jungfernstieg, where we first immerse ourselves in the world of the last turn of the century (1900) and take a look at the transformation of Hamburg’s city centre. The Great Fire of 1842, the cholera epidemic of 1892 and the annexation of Hamburg to the German Reich have left their mark. Various office buildings are located on a small site in Hamburg’s city centre, whose impressive staircases and stairwells you simply have to see!
As a qualified tour guide in Hamburg, I will explain the background to the various architectural styles, point out unknown details and take you into stairwells that you might never have entered on your own. You will discover a wooden night watchman, ornamental oak leaves, flowery tiles, Orientalism, two centuries-old Hamburg companies and a very simple-looking staircase.
You think Hamburg’s staircases are boring? Come with me, I’ll convince you otherwise! Each tour is of course variable and can be customised. Please contact me.
